Project Title: Crime, Politics and the Law: The Goondas, City Politics and Police Surveillance in Colonial Calcutta, 1918-1947.
Abstract of Project :
My research is on the history of crime in colonial Calcutta. My central argument is that the Goondas, the hooligans of Calcutta, rather than being a self evident criminal category, constituted a trope to displace criminality and responsibility for violence on to certain sections of the city's denizens. The Goonda social imaginary was crafted by sections within the elites and the middle class at a time when the city poor enjoyed an increasingly significant presence in city politics. It was brought up at specific conjunctures of violent mass upsurge in Calcutta mainly to express the demands for stricter police surveillance by the said sections.
